Chateau Filhot, Sauternes
Sauternes estate still in the family
This château was founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot and is now owned and managed by one of his descendants, Count Henri de Vaucelles. The estate covers an area of 350 hectares, with 62 hectares of vineyard, all along the south of the Sauternes village in the Sauternes appellation.
The creation of the vineyard dates back to 1630-1650, while the château was built in 1709 by Romain de Filhot. At that time, he changed the old label ‘Wine of Langon’ by introducing the Sauternes appellation. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces joined up the vineyards with those of Pineau du Rey. In 1845, he rebuilt the castle in collaboration with the architect Poitevin, and the landscape gardener Louis-Ferdinand Fischer who contributed to the elaboration of the large garden which surrounds the château.
The vineyard was awarded the ‘Second Cru Classification’ according to the 1855 official classification suggested to Napoleon III by the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux. The wine they produce is a classic Sauternes with a mixture of Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle varieties.
